Where can I look up which kind of screws to buy if I want replacements for the little ones on my phone?
You will need to be more specific.
Regardless I would contact Purism Support.
I can try support but this is a fairly generic issue:
The screws used originally to hold the Librem 5 back frame on were repurposed here to attach the big battery house over top. For the most part the Librem 5 screws have become stuck in the 3d print which is fine when it is in use but if I wanted to go back to a single battery configuration, that is very difficult because I have not managed to remove the screws from the 3D print to put them back. I also lost one of these 6 screws while interacting with this.
Is there some sort of standard issue part number for Librem 5 chassis screws?
I think it has been established that more things than are listed in the Purism Shop are available from Purism in terms of spare parts and the like. The only way of exploring that is to Contact Purism.
The other approach that I can imagine is … find someone who is a “maker” / “handy” … and that person can probably just tell you what specification of screws you are looking at (and where to buy them) but
a) that can be difficult if the screws are really tiny, and
b) you would probably have to have extricated at least one screw.
This is also made more complex by the possibility that the 6 screws are not necessarily identical.
I asked Purism about the Librem 5 screw measurements a few months ago and I was told they are M1.4x2.5 with a thread width of 0.3mm.
This should match the ISO metric screw thread standard (wikiless.tiekoetter.com (Wikipedia)).
Thanks! Appreciate the info, saves me having to bug them.
I updated the documentation. Thanks @gondolyr!
@JCS You might want to add the word “Screws” in the documentation. Change from:
8x M1.4 x 2.5; 0.3mm thread pitch
to:
8x M1.4 x 2.5 screws; 0.3mm thread pitch
There’s info about the screws here: Screw Dimensions · Wiki · Librem5 / hw / 3D_designs · GitLab
@JCS you could add this to the documentation.
Thank you, this has been added. Do we now need the wiki page?
The graphics on the wiki page are nice. If the wiki is removed in favor of the docs, can we put the graphics from the wiki onto the docs?
Go to Ace Hardware. Ace is the last place I know of where tou can go in, find any screw, washer, nut, or fitting, and leave the store with it. In several stores where I live, they have screws ranging from very very small, up to over one foot long. If you can’t find the screws you need there, then try a jeweler.
