It is a bit confusing, but every single person who ordered the Librem 5 was asked for their preference of which batch to be in.

After the preferences were collected, only a small number of people were actually offered a pre-Evergreen device (because there simply have not been that many pre-Evergreen devices). Those who were actually offered an earlier device but decided to wait for Evergreen are the ones getting the first batch of Evergreens.

When it comes to a very very long wait, it is the very final moments where one gets restless. The shipment announcement is probably that exact time. Now that the Purism has started to send out shipment emails, I check my mailbox a trillion times a day to see if I received the email.
@Kyle_Rankin what I noted through all your replies, responses that you are too diplomatic when you answer a question. It is understood that whatever you say here might get used against you. But in the case of the shipment announcement, I think all that was needed was “We are now ready to ship the Librem 5”. Shipment emails will be send as per the queue in which orders were placed.
The early backer, shipment batch sequence, priority et al, adds more confusion around everything.

The fact that they won’t hand out refunds when they originally promised it, tells me what I need to know.
A company that commits breach of contract, will do it again. Just my 2 cents

@G332, well I did not opt out for the very reason that Purism is someone who are attempting something that requires time and most importantly patience.
So, I am with Purism on time aspect, it is okay that they are taking long. I believe it is alright to take time as long as you do it right first time and then eventually every time.
What I don’t like it the fact that get diplomatic in answering to the very people who funded their project. Their answers are neither Yes nor No
That being said, I won’t be abandoning the ship and patiently waiting for my email.

I ordered the pinephone manjaro edition but got one with postmarkos on it and am now trying to decide whether to flash the device or not.

For the record I don’t care if anyone posts. I’m not saying to not post. I’m just questioning the motivation, because that tells me whether I should listen to what is being said.

Well, forum to the rescue. Thanks again for helping me out.

I have one, though i meanwhile flashed Mobian over it. As this is basically the same software as that for L5, i can reassure you, that everything is on the right track. It is positively a proper Linux smartphone. The colleagues at Purism have done it right, at least from my point of view. It is surprisingly close to a “regular smartphone” in sense of Android use cases, but goes beyond it in being a real computer in the pocket, enabling a complete new set of use cases. From the Android point of view there are some rough edges, but its more a case of ongoing fine tuning. Given that the L5 software is already ported to another device and being adopted by more than a dozen distributions should reassure you that the project is on the right track and actually did continuously delivered in good quality.

Thanks, I’ll look into putting Mobian on the SD! I am new to pine phone and opened the box on Friday and discovered Postmark and not Manjaro.

But, just to be clear, my point in making this comment, was to highlight to @ admsjas that things are not perfect in pineophone-land and that @ admsjas should not “live out the fantasy in their mind to fulfill the attached emotions”.

As I have commented elsewhere, I bought the phone to support the ecosystem and get used to small screen linux.

I never claimed things were perfect in pinephoneland, but people in this forum constantly turn a blind eye all in the name of “freedom”. People just accept getting lied to or being deceived by deceptive marketing or other techniques. The community SHOULD be holding any company exhibiting such behavior accountable, but NOOOOOOOOO like i said they’d just rather turn a blind eye. It’s not that I don’t agree with the ideals, even though they are very misguided because in this day and age there’s more than one way to get your data or know who you are but that’s a discussion for a different topic. I think the ideals are good but purism isn’t the company that should be working on them, it’s a horribly managed company that deserves the consequences of its own actions. Most won’t care though, they’ll get sucked in by the fancy marketing and advertising and create this utopian picture in their mind that only purism can fill; thus purism has become the Apple of the Linux community

I’m fairly confident that each of your complaints has been addressed by at least someone in this forum, which means at least someone in this forum has examined what you have to say and formed a retort, which makes the crux of your argument a stacking-the-deck fallacy.

Unless, of course, one of two other things happened: A) those arguments were logically unsound, which you don’t mention here, or B) you simply ignored them because they didn’t agree with you, which would be more stacking the deck. Innocent until proven guilty, so let’s explore A.

WIthin the bounds of this thread, you’ve made two on-topic statements, one based on conjecture and the second a rant, twice replied to something off-topic, and twice engaged with someone who already agreed with you. Let’s only consider the two on-topic statements you’ve made.

The first was a conjecture-filled opinion comparing two companies with very different goals producing similar end-items. Pinephones are marketed as “hacker toys” and L5s are marketed as “Android and iPhone replacements.” Pine doesn’t write the software for its phones, Purism does; but, you’re more focues on hardware, so let us focus on that. Pine went with what worked, what was hackable/replaceable, and what was cheap. Purism, of its own volition, went with what worked, what was hackable/replaceable, and what could be configured such that they could achieve RYF certification. The latter constraint put quite a lot of restriction on hardware and even necessitated some custom manufacturing.

But perhaps you’ll turn a blind eye to that.

Additionally, saying “Pinephone can make a lot of cheap phones, why can’t Purism?” is like saying “Toyota can make a lot of cheap cars, why can’t Ferrari?” They can, but that isn’t what their goal is.

Your second on-topic post mentioned deceptive marketing and/or advertising and lies. “Lies,” I assume, refers to the refund policy. I will agree, as pretty much everyone here already has, that Purism should not have changed the refund policy without giving people a heads-up and probably an opportunity to get their money back at that time instead of just silency chaning the policy. We’ve all read about it, and most of us has spoken about it. Eyes looking at that topic have not been blind, and there’s evidence in multiple threads. Most of us have forgiven them. You are within your rights to not, but blaming, faulting, or getting angry at any of the rest of us for anything that has to do with the refund policy is an ad hominem fallacy. “Deceptive marketing,” I assume, refers to shipping scheduling and reports. Purism has never missed a scheduled date without explanation, even if that means a batch started shipping at the end of a window. It still counts, it would hold up in court, they did what they said they would. One’s understanding of how large a batch is going to be or the volume of units moved or any other details presumed by one that turned out to not be accurate is nothing more than a misinterpretation. Or maybe I missed something? I don’t read the blogs like I used to. Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t take this as another opportunity to cherry-pick. We won’t take you seriously otherwise.

I didn’t know Purism was horribly managed, when did you work for them? Or should we trust the words of ex-employees without evidence?

The point is, you have provided no reason for any of us to believe you, at least not here, and I’m not cross-posting. Message me if you like and then I can come back here and tell everyone how right you have been all along (provided you can prove it to me), otherwise your angry words will remain exactly that.

It would be nice to actually get to the bottom of all this, though. A discussion that isn’t a crusade would be most welcome.
