First of all, huge thanks to the Purism team. This computer is fantastic. A dream come true. Amazing what you have pulled off IMO. I hope you will build on this fantastic idea with more Librem Minis in the future.
I’m noticing this minor but persistent “hard disk”-like sound coming from my Mini. Since there are no hard drives, it’s of course not that. From googling “ssd noises”, it turns out they make no such noises but it could be some capacitors making these noises.
Does that make any sense? Has anyone experienced similar issues?
Fans are a mechanical device which could theoretical cause sounds or noise. The bear or lair or what is it called in the hub? It is sensible and can be damaged if not handled with care.
I saw was has been written in your CPU 100% thread. So I think its best to contact support like it has been suggested.
What is your audio set up? including audio out via video? via 3.5mm jack? Is it possible that this is actual sound being produced? Are you using it headless? Can you mute it in order to eliminate this possibility?
it could be the iGPU in the ‘package’ LibremMini. i don’t hear these sounds on ANY AMD APU board i come across …
i have both LMv1 and LMv2 and they BOTH have this ‘noise’ issue you’re describing … maybe it’s just the sound data makes when it’s being ‘secured’ by the sig-int community
that would be coils.
quite common problem in mini PC.
because in normal pc you have powersupply that delivers most common voltages 3/5/12V there is no need to do power onversion.
With NUCs and minipcs you have powersupply providing (eg.) 19V , as ram , cpu require 1.2V … you have to convert voltage. so you have some coils and dumpers on board, and when they are laoded they create noise.
if i can advise, do measurement of your powerbrick under load, if voltage matches input specs of librem mini , you don’t have anything to worry about.
it’s clearly a power/coil thingy set off by the GPU when it’s power-draw is spiking … you can verify this under Blender’s 3D viewport to see if you can reproduce it. you will hear that ‘sound’ as soon as you start orbitting/panning (having a 3d model in there also helps to bring up the GPU utilization)
otherwise it’s quite hard to reproduce this problem reliably on the GNOME desktop …
This appears to be a known and reproducible issue. Maybe @Kyle_Rankin@MrChromebox and Purism team can investigate this issue for the next Librem Mini (v3)?
it’s more of a mobile PSU issue (the power brick that laptops/mini-PCs use) … normal PSUs from regular desktops/workstations/servers don’t usually have this ‘sound’ since they frequently use high grade components via rails to deliver the amperage required by the power-delivery mechanism on the board … there can also be some VRM issue involved … check out the " hardcore overclocking " channels on snooptube for more >>>
