I joined and tried to find content. No matter what I typed, nothing but porn showed up. What a disgrace. Servers are monitored for racism, sexism, and transphobia, but not porn? Really?
I did not have that experience yet. Although, I do most of my federated social posts on a Friendica server, not the Librem Mastodon one. I did make connections between the accounts though.
I just went on and tried a few searches and got ordinary results. What did you try searching for? Maybe I can see if we get different results.
Librem Social is not full of porn.
Other Mastodon instances are dedicated to it however, and they show up in search results. (You can see all of Mastodon in search results)
For example, search on âChicagoâ and there are a lot of people⌠advertising their services. Same with Dallas⌠which is unfortunate, as these are locations Iâm interested in, but not in people showing off their assets.
You can moderate the results yourself. Just block a few instances - switter, sinblr, humblr, twimblr, maybe a couple more - and the porn is gone.
I prefer this self-moderation to an instance that decides for me what I can see and what I cannot. You can moderate instances with hate-speech the same way if you wish. And for those that want to see that content, they are free to.
What you do is tap on a person in that instance (domain), tap on the sandwich menu (3 lines), and tap âBlock entire domainâ
I blocked a few domains (mentioned above), and I never see porn now.
IMO (you will and thatâs ok probably disagree) thatâs how it should be as itâs not violating human rights but possibly only the moral attitude of some. However I would expect the adult content warning, which I until now always had when pornographic content appeared in the mastodon public timeline.
What I donât know is how one would give access to children in mastodon with that. But thinking about it itâs probably the same as internet in general. You should be around your kid when itâs in the internet - if not the kid could as well just broswe to [enter your favourite porn portal].
Reminds me of the song from Avenue Q. And rule 34. No escape from it.
Make sure to go into âAccount Preferencesâ and disable âAlways show sensitive contentâ. That way if you do come across federated users that promote that sort of thing, you wonât see what theyâve posted unless it is explicitly clicked on it (pun intended).
Itâs just as well I never figured out how to use LIbrem Social. I donât even know what to click on and even if I got there, where do I go from there?
this subject seems like itâs too easily overlooked and i apreciate you bringing it up.
i for one donât want to be bombarded unexpectedly with such content if i donât explicitly ask for it. imo such content should be disabled by default and only made available after jumping through some hoops first. that way you know youâve âearnedâ it if you manage to find it. itâs way to easy to find stuff like this âŚ
also nice click bait
That is a fraught position.
How about ⌠first time you login, it asks you whether you want any filtering? No default. Just a yes/no question, presented with sufficient background information to allow you to make an informed decision. You answer. You decide. Not someone else.
LOL, yeah.
How did you search for content? I donât get anything except for posts from people I follow.
To search for content:
Iâm using the Librem Social mobile app (iPhone). There is a magnifying glass at the top. I tap on it, and then type in the search box.
People whoâs names match first. After that are matching hashtags. Tap on the hash tag you want.
Oh! Itâs an actual search by terms! I was thinking they were getting it in a feed of new content.
