Librem5 inbound calls not ringing

Lately my Librem5 is not producing any sound when I receive an inbound call. I have a Purism SIM subscription.

I don’t see any settings that would enable/disable/change this behavior.

How do I get a ringer back?

(Sorry if I chose the wrong category for this. I only think the phone/dialer is “phosh”.)

Thanks,

Dave

Pull down the android like menu, there is a button on there that may fix it sound.

What is the “android like menu”?
The phone app has a single button at the top right, the “hamburger” or options menu, with 2 choices: “VoIP Accounts” and “About Calls” (which tells me the app is “gnome-calls” 45.alpha.0, last copyright year is 2022)

In the Settings app, neither Notifications nor Sound have any choices related to the phone. (Notifications has an on/off button for Calls, which is set to “On”)

My plan is SIMple from Purism.

EDIT: my phone just rang, but the display went blank so I was unable to answer it. My L5 experience deteriorates seemingly every week. :frowning:

EDIT #2: after a restart, when I dialed voicemail, screen went blank again. I had to hit the power button a few times to get what looked like the lock screen with a single notification for the active call. Tapping that brought me to the dialer screen, but now it is dark mode not light mode. Very frustrating.

Save it until Gnu Dawn.

Librem 5 it is a magic device, but thanks to opensource is in a complete disgrace.
Phosh Desing is a full disgrace, Phosh started like Hero and ended like Villain.

So wayland+systemD+flatpak+pipewire will make Gnu PureOS like IOS or Android, Windows Mobile experience thanks to opensource free bug fixes mainline… so this is why i not using my Librem 5 on Brave Mode from Gnu crimson either.

So mainline it is not good anymore…

It seems like your proximity sensor might not be working properly

“Android like menu” is the quick settings (swipe down from the top of the screen). In here you can toggle the audio from Sound to Vibrate to Quiet.

Although it sounds like that was not your problem.

When your screen it going blank, is it possible that you are covering or getting close to the top of the phone/earpiece?
There’s a proximity sensor that triggers the screen to go blank when a call is active (such as for when you have the phone up against your ear during a call, the screen turns off).

Also, I thought there was an “Automatic Brightness” setting in Phosh Mobile Settings, you might try looking for that and tweaking it. However I can’t seem to find that anymore (I’m running Crimson) so that setting might now longer exist.
Check out the Sensors menu in Phosh Mobile Settinhgs, though.

Aha, good call. Yes, I blocked what I thought was the camera, but apparently it is used for both proximity and image. That stinks, because if I want to enable the microphone but mask the camera it doesn’t seem to be possible without interfering with the proximity sensor.

It’s not, but the proximity sensor is next to the front camera so you may have blocked them both. It’s not that close though, covering just one of them is perfectly possible.

Here’s a diagram, prepared by me, that shows approximately what you are shooting for: Frequently Asked Questions · Wiki · Librem5 / docs / Librem 5 Community Wiki · GitLab

Not exactly to scale and e.&o.e. but with precision and accuracy it should be doable.

If you shine a flashlight onto the phone at a right angle you should be able to see it under the glass.

Wow, it took some cleaning of the glass but then I could just see it (them? it looked like maybe a pair of spots for the proximity sensor). Thanks for the tip.

I’m still left wondering why the phone stopped ringing. Does the proximity detection also disable ring tone?

There are two sensors in that hole - proximity and ambient light.

No. Is your feedback profile set to On/Full? Is the audio output device set to Speaker?

What or where is “feedback profile”? Yes, audio output is speaker. BT/wifi power switch is off. I was receiving text notification sounds when the ringer did not ring.

After restarting, I did get ringer audio from a call. I don’t receive a lot of calls, so it may be a while before it shows up again, if ever.
