I only hope the firmware gets rolling upgrades before they ship. It seems strange that the production dept. would ship old revisions as a business practice and rely on the customer to update them. Or someone in software engineering is not talking to production.

Why would it be strange? The software will already be behind by the time it reaches customer’s hands, and needs to be updated. I thought this was normal: Windows laptops, console games… Having a rolling release would make the initial flashing more error prone, so it’s easier to flash just a single known version for some time, then switch to another well known one.

Only because I’ve worked in a U.S. factory that made actually made hardware. If they’re shipping hardware with months old firmware and O/S, that would be unacceptable in a production environment. If what is going on here is missing a week-old update after it ships, I understand THAT.

But we’re talking puri.sm production, who knows what goes on?

This might be fixed now. I suggest you confirm the current status the next time there are updates available and/or hunt up the relevant “issue”.

I think there was definitely discussion of different channel widths. Keep it simple and standard with the channel width.

I haven’t seen any discussion that the actual channel makes a difference - although if you are in a crowded neighbourhood, “auto” may be better, but otherwise not using “auto” always locks things down more i.e. gets rid of one variable.

As for the band, 2.4 GHz will very likely give stronger reception (and you probably won’t notice any difference in bandwidth).

Before I received my phone, I checked this forum several times a week. When I got it, I stopped visiting the forum. I would update my phone, and on the same day or the next day, I would see Purism post a news article about the new feature that I had just played with. At that point, visiting the forum was kind of pointless. However, I am here again, because the birch battery is tiny compared to the evergreen, and features like encryption, camera, MMS, and VoLTE (with the default modem or maybe the USA version) are coming together.

I know people are disappointed about the hardware delays, but software development is progressing regardless, so when people do get the phone, it will be more of a polished product. If you are not the kind of person that likes seeing the product being built, it may be best to wait. I expect that by October, the out-of-the-box experience will be much more friendly to non-Linux users. Even after all of the delays, the world still needs a performant phone without a walled garden, which is just a nice term for prison.

Where can I see your table? Is it published?

As so often, important information inside the parentheses.

The attitude of not yet knowing things is very good, it’s something we need more of. Everyone should be moving in the direction of understanding more about the world around them, including the technology they use. That way, we get power moving away from big authorities controlling and manipulating people, with more power instead ending up in the hands of individuals.

Knowledge is power!

Interesting is the late shipping date (May 16). Any idea what have caused this? Was it delayed by your reply to the shipping confirmation mail?

Yes, it was a late ship date. I must dig up the email date for the address and modem choice confirmation - so the dates illustrate the situation.

I had not intended to share the following details, but since you observed the late ship date, I hope it will encourage others who are still waiting…

I believe my situation is an outlier - purism admitted to me that my order had somehow become misplaced.

Yet I believe it was likely largely due to actions I took in the ordering process…let me expand…

Firstly, I purchased the $500 voucher for the original funding campaign for the very first Librem laptop…which they graciously allowed me to apply to the Librem5 pre-order to which I added an additional payment to pay for the L5.

On top of this, I had shut down the SMTP server for the original email address I used on my order…

And on top of that - so much time had passed that I no longer had - nor could I remember the last 4 digits of the cc number I used on my original order.

And amidst all this the Covid 19 thing disrupted so many things…

I was very patient and persistent as I began to observe others with similar timelines were receiving their L5.

I sent a few emails expressing my concerns, and after received my address confirm email and shipping window, I continued to wait.

When the shipping window had passed I waited about 2 more weeks, and then lost my composure and sent a nastygram threatening to post here about the delay…

The next day I sent an apology when I realized that my threats were not helping anyone really…and the recipient of that email graciously accepted my apology.

Some time thereafter I received the notice that my order had gone astray.

Shortly after that I received a tracking email for the shipment and the rest you know.
