Organized cybersecurity/data privacy parties

This is such a great idea, and it sounds like it’s catching on in lots of places: Now you can break up with big tech at a bar: ‘cybersecurity disguised as a party’ | Surveillance | The Guardian

In Germany we have a movement for a switch to open source and drop us-big tech. Which is not fully fair because China ones was not up to date. However. US is great too because it also support and invent open source too. We have to share and push some info and education together like the internet in the early days.

Just focus on humans and not info warfare. I still think that we can come together and share a better version of tomorrow if we not find but build it together.

“break up with Big Tech” is a good slogan but the reality is more nuanced. For most people the first step in the break up is at least changing it from a toxic, abusive relationship to an occasional hook up. That could take the form of just improving a few settings. Many people will never have the full break up.

It is all about consent. I want what I, as in me, want not what the cellular company or the phone maker want. Take my money and serve my needs, monopoly removes my options.

Why do I get the idea that a privacy party would be more like a self storage center where everyone locks themselves separately inside a 5’ by 10’ closet with a roll up metal door?

Sounds like a key signing party where we get to meet know people and exchange public keys in person for encrypted communications. It could be trading QR codes between phones or speaking and writing passphrases, QR or phrase stamps or stickers at an open party social but disciplined where electronic devices are prohibited, then a short privacy time with entry of the passphrases once the meet and greet keys exchange ends, finally verified phrasebook burning bonfire at the end after which the hard drinks are served. I like the high paranoia as it is most secure and as long as it is done in a fun way makes it more exciting to practice tradecraft.
