Regarding the GoogleBorg, I note that Mozilla is a sponsor level member of FIDO, as is Red Hat - so there is some interest outside of proprietary Big Tech.

And Bitwarden is an associate level member.

I don’t think Passkeys is going to be more secure than using a password manager with randomly generated strong passwords.

Passkeys are two-factor authentication while passwords are one-factor authentication. So passkeys are more secure than passwords.
Then there is the way to secure the password or passkey database or account. I expect the same possibilities on either side.

And in one very select case, it will be less secure i.e. where the user uses a randomly generated strong password and, because the web site is so important, chooses not to record the password in the password manager, and just remember it

The password will still be vulnerable to keyloggers and phishing, which are mitigated by passkeys.

Anyways, looks like iOS 16 has support for Passkeys and, if you trust Apple even more, support for synching Passkeys via iCloud Keychain. (Upgrading because of the latest Zero-Day.)
