Please remember that byzantium’s limited security support (based on Debian bullseye’s LTS) ends on August 31, 2026. No updates will be provided beyond that date, so make sure you’ve upgraded all your devices to PureOS 11 (crimson) by then.
Remember what? Not everyone has full time of nothing to do but read everything Puri, with all it’s teckinese to boot, link to links inside links to figure out what something means, in order to understand what hobbyists are saying. Darn frustrating.
In English - does the novel at the link you give end with what? Phone will or won’t work any more after Aug., 31, 2026?
Is/will it be safe to use - or are there so many security holes that won’t be patched any longer that I’d be better off up’ing to the very young and innocent Crimson?
The phone is not a hobby for me. I have neither the time nor inclination to start all over again and get to where my L5 is today.

Phone will work.
This isn’t frigging Microsoft.
However you will be taking the decision to accept a certain level of security risk if you choose not to upgrade.
With AI tools churning their way through Linux source code and finding new exploits at a higher than usual rate, it would be a particularly dangerous time to decide not to upgrade.
You are better off upgrading to crimson, yes.
crimson has been a long time in the gestation, so not exactly young and innocent.
I used the GUI upgrade tool to guide and carry out the upgrade (on the Librem 5). It worked for me.
Note that it is an in-place upgrade. So you don’t need to “start over”. It’s not a reflash, where you do have to start over, but that is an alternative if you wanted to.
I can tell. Puri makes that very clear with the L5 GUI.
I think I (note might) might until there has been more beta testing in the wild. Especially noting comments about Crimson and:
- Has the camera been fixed.
- Do 4k movies play yet?
- Stopped making copy or copies of every text?List item
- Does Fire Fox work better now?
- Does battery life between charges improved?
I am not asking anyone the above. Those are things I’ll watch for.

Yes. Much better than any of the horrible UIs Microsoft has pushed over the years of Windows’ horrid existence.
Just speaking from my own experiences here.
Has the camera been fixed.
Camera works and has improved color processing.
Do 4k movies play yet?
Probably not. I struggle to have 1080p videos play in mpv, though 1080p videos seem generally fine through YouTube in a web browser.
Stopped making copy or copies of every text?
This does not appear to be happening anymore.
Does Fire Fox work better now?
In what way? It feels about the same – stable for me.
Does battery life between charges improved?
I’ve not tested this, though other people are reporting better battery life.

Its not a milestone like some up to date Android or Apple Phones. But like 33% increase. I get my phone with 60% Batterie at 9 o Clock and it has up to 18 o Clock 44%. Without changing. By minimal usage.
Before i had to load it full at 15 o Clock before because it was empty. Its no milestone like new androids or ios but its a huge improvement!
