After one initial use, when I launch PureOS store on my new Librem 16, it never displays anything after the initial warning about how long it will take. The spinning wheel is not spinning. Is there some known way to get this working?

This is likely due to optimizations that are needed with GNOME Software. I think they will be present in PureOS Dawn.

Well I found one clue: on the About dialog, the “Report an Issue” link points to the Librem5 source code page, not Librem 16…?
That was a note from Feb 2023 … 3 and a half years ago … discussing GNOME Software in Endless OS. Is the GNOME Software in Crimson really that old???
And wasn’t that about slow speeds rather than the software hanging?

Possibly, but the laptop has only been up for a few days when this happens. I didn’t see a definition of “long”. I’m happy to use apt but that requires me to poll for updates. When working properly, PureOS Store tells me updates are ready. Also my other Linux machines running Lubuntu do a good job of both notifying and updating.
Is there a pointer someone could share to the rationale for Purism choosing Gnome?

Me too. And not just on the Librem 5.
My only gripe with that is that occasionally I run into a lock problem, particularly on the Librem 5, where my attempt to use apt in the shell conflicts with a background service doing the same thing at the same time. (So if one is determined to do all updates manually at the shell prompt then probably that service should be disabled.)

For my other Linux machines I use Fedora. Fedora uses dnf instead of apt, but I saw the hanging GNOME Software many times on the Fedora machines as well. I like the command line a bit more than the GUI anyway, therefore I do not use GNOME Software often, but I have the impression that GNOME Software works way better nowadays than in the past, so I think the issue with hanging is mostly solved. I guess the fix will reach PureOS in a future version.
As a side note: there is also Bazaar. I have it installed on my Fedora computers, but in practice I do not really use it, so I cannot really confirm if it works well.

I have recently ported PureOS Store onto the newer GNOME Software codebase for PureOS Dawn and I can confirm - at least from my interactions with it while testing - that it works much better than it used to in older versions.
