With 4G LTE going the way of the dinosaur in the near future, perhaps we should consider the technical specifications for Purism’s Librem 5 replacement modem.
I have some ideas. The next modem for the Librem 5 should be both 5G and dual SIM. The reason for the dual SIM is to allow two 5G networks to be run simultaneously on the Librem 5 or Liberty phone. One network might be T-Mobile or another mainstream cell phone service. The other network could be the 5G n48 band, also known as CBRS. CBRS is a new service. The CBRS hardware is just now starting to become available. But the idea is that you can buy a CBRS system for your home or business at a reasonable cost. In such a case it would work much like a WiFi system, but with longer range and with potentially infinite growth capacity. From there, you can scale up to cover the whole city if you can afford to. Each location (including your home or business) is registered and managed as your own private cell phone service area. You can let others use it either for free or you can charge them a subscription fee. If this kind of system were to be run like a ham radio club with an unlimited number of repeaters (except no ham radio license needed), large private networks could grow and potentially displace the big incumbent phone service providers. The only difference would be that each of these networks could set their own rules. No Advertising, No spying, No Google nor Apple allowed unless they (Google and Apple) accept our terms of service, which would completely de-monitize them and criminalize their current business model. At first, the two SIM cards would be needed. But eventually after the CBRS network grows enough and fills with valuable services there (a new internet, new email, etc..), would replace the old internet. Then you no longer need T-Mobile or Verizon or any other mainstream carrier except for perhaps travel to more rural areas. Anyone who puts up a shared CBRS system on their home or business would get free membership. Others pay a low monthly subscription fee. Only members could access the network. Anyone caught advertising or spying on the network gets kicked off and/or prosecuted.
