SD card mounting: hit or miss

On a related note, what should I try if I am unable to detect or mount a uSD card, a USB-C flash drive, the phone is not detected by my linux computer when I try to reflash an OS image, the icons for cell signal (4G and warning) and bluetooth (off) do not disappear when I put all 3 physical switches into lockdown mode, and terminal lags while running sudo dmesg without displaying any output?
