This is precisely why I don’t have signal installed, but there is demand in most IM threads. I trust nothing which requires my phone number or to even offer to look at my contacts list. Tox and Briar(uses tox) seem to be where it’s at and for now there are not so many people there. I guess like Antarctica where scientists and support personnel are all there is. I hate that so many people who are privacy conscious are essentially sold out by family members seeking convenience(looking at you meta-whatsapp), sort of like them paying to add their DNA swabs to 23andme for entertainment where it is now a sellable asset in the bankruptcy(accidentally on-purpose?) that sells out the entire family tree of people’s genetic fingerprint, health profile, and privacy.
