What didn’t immediately follow were dramatic gains in grades
Another aspect of this is “cheating”. With the advent of widespread AI and other online “help”, loss of access to phones by students could result in grades going down because the weaker students, who need to cheat, are no longer able to cheat. Maybe gains in grades by some students (those who were then more attentive etc.) were offset by declines in grades by other students.
