Did you try typing two \ instead of a single one so that it’s seen as a character and not a command/markup?

Use three backslash, like on Reddit, to remove the italic:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe add another backslash before the last underscore, to be extra sure that no underscores are interpreted as italics:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
