The unborn Librem

What ever happened to the Librem 16?
Disappeared from all radars…
Any news, anyone?

The Librem 16 is coming. It will include either PureOS Crimson or Dawn. As discussed elsewhere, there is a substantial amount of effort involved in the Crimson release, while the Dawn release is expected to be relatively straightforward once we reach the first production release of Crimson. Purism has been designing the Librem 16 for some time and is currently negotiating with vendors and inventory lenders to bring it to market. Various internal adjustments and infrastructure improvements have caused delays in the development of the Librem 16, but these efforts will ultimately benefit the entire Librem ecosystem by enhancing quality assurance and more transparent, consistent communication from Purism.

Cool! Happy to learn that it was not abandonned.
Can’t wait to see the final product released!

Cant wait to buy one, to replace my Librem14 whereas I borked the battery connector when swapping out an aged one

Can that not be repaired?

It can be, for the cost of a replacement MB. I was quoted about $475 for a new part. However, I’d rather invest that money into the Librem 16. Hopefully its not vaporware! The Librem 14 I have continues to serve me - tethered to A/C power and external power cells..

It’s a good solution (rather than having to buy a new MB)

Also makes it much lighter to carry around once the battery is removed.

(from the shop)

Estimated date of fulfillment: June 8-12, 2026

It’s getting there (but, as with any estimate, there is still time for delays).

Sorry, but I couldn’t find any mention of a Librem 16 - not on the home site, the Shop or anywhere else…
Besides, there was no release announcement, specs and price.
Where did you see that?

Yes, it is well hidden. You need to go to the shop and then “search…” in the shop and then lo and behold 4 configurations of Librem 16 will come up as if by magic.

I am not psychic though. It was announced in the Purism Newsletter. (So I am taking this information as public.)

The date is on the shop page.

Thanks. Hard to find, indeed. No general specs yet.
BUT: outrageously expensive - starts at $2899 for the Base config and as high as $9799 for the Max. Who can afford this?

In the Max config it is, at first glance, an insane config at an insane price. On account of this announcement, I went and looked at the retail price for high capacity NVMe SSDs (out of curiosity only - I have no need for that kind of storage config). For some makes and models of NVMe SSDs, the incremental price for the storage is roughly in the right ballpark - but it is also possible to get much cheaper NVMe SSDs at the same capacity. But who needs 16TB of NVMe SSD on a laptop? If you do then even if you buy the Base config and then take out the supplied SSD and install your own SSDs, the storage is still going to be quite expensive. That’s just the reality of wanting 16TB of NVMe SSD storage.

I’m a bit unconvinced of the marketing wisdom of offering that kind of config - since it will attract responses similar to yours i.e. “OMG, who can afford to pay $9799 for a laptop?”

Anyway, it is at least good that the unborn has become the (almost) born, which is after all what you originally asked.

The one above the Max, just plain “Librem 16” is $999,999.00

LOL. OK, that’s just a bug though. There are 4 valid configurations. The fifth configuration (unfortunately listed first) is buggy.

Unfortunately, I could not find more information other than the teaser and the information in the shop. I would be interested to buy a Librem16 (my Librem15 from 2019 is slightly showing issues of age…), but I would need to know the form factor (will it fit in the sleeves and backpacks I currently use with my Librem15?) and also about the connectivity (USB-A ports mostly).

Some time ago I answered the survey here Librem 16 form factor poll , but am not sure how this poll feeds or fed back into the design.

I’d suppose with an estimated delivery date of june 2026, the design should be in a quite finalized state, or am I wrong?

I would assume that too i.e. finalized.

They got the Librem 14 to fit in the Librem 13 envelope and I think they intend that the Librem 16 fit in the Librem 15 envelope (via reduced bezel width).

I am hopeful for several USB-A ports (Librem 15 has 4). More USB-C might be worth giving up an A or two, but I am fearful of few or no A and only a single C beyond power in.

More information is coming soon. Full specifications and other interesting details about the Librem 16 are currently subject to product-launch embargoes.
