This week the file browser on my Byzantium install no longer opens files and folders by clicking. I didn’t do any upgrades and I don’t recall changing anything. What gives?

You can try reinstalling nautilus
and see if that resolves your issue.
If it makes you feel better I can share that clicking never worked for me
My solution workaround has been to open the keyboard and hit the Enter key there to open a file.
I am in the habit of doing this. However, it no longer works. The problem is that even after restarting the device, tapping on the screen at the location of the file typically does not select that file. As a result, the enter key of the keyboard does not open the file. Often the first tap of a file works, however, and it is all subsequent taps that are dead now.
Around the time of the issue, I might have accidentally tapped the title bar with the sort button, and told it to sort on name. This seems to have no off function. If the problem is that I have some metadata cached in a dotfile to sort the column, which is not present by default, would this disappear if I remove and reinstall nautilus?
No, your entire filesystem will remain intact except for any changes within the nautilus
installation directory itself.
It seems like the issue goes away if I use this toggle in the bottom. Maybe that was the issue. I’ll change the thread title.
That toggle is used for showing either the list or grid view.
Yes, it seems that my problem manifests in the list view, but is not present in the Grid view. I might have previously lived my life in Grid view, so maybe it’s user error and I’m not supposed to use List view.
