Updating discourse to latest version

I have made a clone of this discourse forum at https://forums-update.puri.sm and updated it to current latest version v2026.7.3.

Basics are working, more testing and feedback is welcome. If more positive feedback is received and no negative feedback, then I will update forums.puri.sm in next few days.

If possible, can you put a “banner” on the clone? So that people know that it is the clone? (I would hate to think that someone who is logged into the clone accidentally makes a detailed reply, which reply gets wiped out when the testing period ends.)

Also, bear in mind that this new version introduces 6 new “like” options (“reaction” choices) i.e. 7 in total, by default - which is a little unhelpful. In some respects there should be internal and external debate regarding which of those should be retained / configured before going live.

Edit: I believe the intention with that change is to be more “social media compatible” / “text messaging compatible”.

I expect we will need to test only a few days, at most a week - just to make sure there is no obvious regressions or blockers. I’d probably stay with upstream defaults unless there is a very strong opinion against something.

Also changed version to 2026.7.3 ESR release which is supported up to April 2027.

Make a quick poll here..?

There were some issues during this version change, so I’m redoing it, so wait till I fix those before doing tests.

How about, in that case, you configure the reaction choices so as to be unchanged from the current version (which I believe requires non-default configuration in the new version) and then we can take longer over the discussion?

I will do that in the next few days if noone else does.

Looks like a mistake in hostname configuration trapped us to lets encrypt rate limits. So I set it on a new server and domain https://forums-update.puri.sm

Please also find out those configuration options - I’m not very keen on deviating too much from the defaults as it adds to maintenance burden. If it is easy to do and a lot of people actually want it, then we can consider it.

I personally like it as it is consistent with many other apps and people actually expect it. Most apps even expose the full emoji set.

Perhaps as discussed here: Discourse Reactions - Plugin - Discourse Meta

Specifically, discourse_reactions_enabled_reactions or even just discourse_reactions_enabled to turn it off (and be the same as it is now).

The Rocket look better. Any ETA for upgrading the forum?

updating != upgrading

I will schedule the update on 1st October.

Thanks for finding the options, I will go with the defaults for now. If a lot of people feel strongly about this feature, we can consider this later. Since this update also brings security fixes, I don’t want to delay the update further.

Starting this update, you can check status in the matrix room #community-general:talk.puri.sm

This update is now completed.

Thanks.

But i want to be honest, i really DO NOT Like discourse, and it is shame that Purism it is using…

discourse is evil.

What is a better open source alternative? That is not “evil” in your opinion?

Any free software non java.

I like: https://www.phpbb.com/ this is nice because no java, no need ram like, no j.i.t, and security fast and ethical. gplv2. Netsurf browser compatible.

https://nodebb.org gplv3

OooO The fancy Rocket is from Dino i guess. I didnt pay attention from 2 pretty same imagen then no one tell me. thanks all.

discourse is not written in java, it is ruby on rails GitHub - discourse/discourse: A platform for community discussion. Free, open, simple. · GitHub
