I try hard to avoid running any Android application even if it makes life harder. When I don’t have a choice (second authentication factors for banking and work, basically), my preferred option is Waydroid which works ok. I run it on my Librem5, which means it has no access to my data (contact list, calendars and photos, mainly) or location. I know a dedicated attacker could probably escape Waydroid and access all that but don’t consider that a realistic threat. If you’re willing to spend (recurrent) cash, someone posted instructions on how to run it at a hosting provider (which would then, in theory, have access to your in-waydroid data but presumably not your personal data/location at all).
Third and IMO worst option is having a hardware Android device, especially worst if you need that on the road. I use a Fairphone for the two applications that I must use and that require a camera for scanning codes. So when I take it along I’m sure The Man is still keeping track of where I go.
(Honestly, I’m still traumatised from that time when my Android phone (specifically, Google Maps) suddenly asked me questions about a restaurant where I had eaten a week earlier, as I was again walking on the street near that restaurant. I had not opened Google Maps at any time, but it was still clearly keeping track the whole time)
