What About Facetime?

Does anyone know if there are plans to run the Apple FaceTime application (an opensource version of Facetime) on the Librem 5?

Would this be a very feasible thing to do? Or does Apple have everything locked up tightly enough to prevent any other platform from interfacing with Apple users on FaceTime? What are the technical issues?

I was trying to find the source code but I couldn’t, do you know where can I find it?

Are you saying there is an opensource version of FaceTime or asking if there is an opensource application that works with FaceTime? I would be shocked if Apple allows for applications it doesn’t create to do FaceTime.

Apple and open source as well as privacy are mutually exclusive.

I’ve put my family on notice that the last phase of our privacy plan is to De-Apple.

Based upon my research so far, it looks like Jitsi is the best self-hosted open source alternative to FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx, etc. and I’ve started playing with Jitsi via Linode Marketplace, since Linode seems to be the most predictable cost-effective self-hosting platform including a $100 credit for new users. YMMV

You can use brave browser’s brave talk.

True. I’ve completely switched to the Brave browser on all my devices, but in this new world order of zero trust the most private solution is always the self-hosted one.

Remember that “if you’re not paying for the service, then YOU ARE THE SERVICE” even when it comes to privacy-focused companies.

Check out the following for how to set up your own self-hosted Jitsi server:

Seems like Brave Talk is using 8x8 in the backend, which is a backer (or the parent company?) of Jitsi. So it’s still not self-hosted, but also not too far off from Jitsi Meet itself.

Point being is do you trust a 3rd party to host as much as hosting yourself. The big difference is that even if DIY on a 3rd party platform at least YOU and only YOU have control over the encrypted channels and not the platform.
