I ordered a lapdock kit from Purism several years ago now. It’s been sufficiently long enough that I do not remember when I ordered it, but it was probably in the year 2023.
I’ll make a mental note to try to remember to reply here if it ever actually materializes and ships to me.
Would it be paranoid for me to mention that when I ordered a second lapdock from Nexdock website directly instead of Purism, this direct non-Purism order shipped almost instantly but the ene product was spyware ish and lacked the capability to turn off Wifi, and if you go in the menu and pick wire instead of Wifi then as soon as the phone on the wire goes to sleep the dock re-enables its Wifi to try to be “easy” to use, and also it doesn’t work properly with Librem 5 over wifi without massive headache and it says in English on the screen “connect your Android” or something akin to that
Just saying, I have a hunch Purism might have an awful time getting permission to get more of the original ones made if the primary source company who makes them is busy profiting off of spyware instead
(Basically, anywhere that I go where I want to travel in a mobile way, if I have packing space for the trashy Nexdock what I can do is put my Librem 14 in that packing space instead. And I have a way better time with that, for so many reasons, and then the dock sits and rots back at home somewhere.)

Waiting for years is a pain I was lucky to receive my Librem 5 very quickly at the end of 2023, but it seems that’s not the case with some of the other products.

I’m waiting for the Librem 14 v2 (the first one is out of stock) and I wanted to try to use my Librem 5 in full with Lapdock Kit. I’m using GNU Emacs frequently (which is a bit of pain on Librem 5 ) on my computers, so this thing would certainly be of help for me.
The Lapdock Kit as sold in the Purism store is still on backorder due to the ODM’s difficulty in procuring units/components from their manufacturer. Purism had recently managed to purchase very small quantities of Lapdocks through this ODM and shipped them in FIFO fashion, but those are no longer available, even at full retail pricing (yes, Purism was taking a loss on these orders in an attempt to fulfill backorders).
What’s next
I recently coordinated a shipment of a similar model from the same ODM to Purism’s engineering team for thorough compatibility testing. Upon satisfactory review, Purism will email all customers with backordered Lapdocks to ask if they choose to opt for the alternative product.
These replacement Lapdocks will be larger but are expected to have identical/similar functionality. These units are also more costly, but Purism will upgrade existing backorders at no extra cost to the customers. We may consider adjusting our SKU to ensure availability, but future pricing for such Lapdock Kits will be adjusted to maintain healthy margins.
This is great news.
I really dig the Lapdock Kit that I bought, and it was sad to hear how long they’ve been unavailable in the store for other people to order.
Not only that, but I convinced a friend to order one too (it’s for an Android phone, but at least he will order them from Purism, once they’re available).
I don’t plan on getting another, but I am curious to hear what the differences are on this “similar” model, once you’re ready to share them.
