Librem 5 Maps not seeing my location

Maps tells me I am in London - but I am not.

Is there any witchcraft needed for maps to become usable?

How to get GPS working? (Librem 5) - #4 by dos

You might want to check your geoclue config.

I think we might have made this more complicated by discussing it on Purism forums. After lots of Librem 5 Evergreens started shipping, network analytics showed frequent traffic to Google Cloud IPs coming from Librem 5’s.

Turns out location isn’t GPS much anymore. GPS was brilliant. It was intake only. You could find yourself on a map without telling anybody about it – pinpointing your location with the nearest satellites.

On Android and iOS mainstream society has come to expect better than GPS. The way it works is that instead of using a 1-way intake of information like GPS, instead you do a 2-way communication that consists of asking Google Cloud where you are, and they tell you it, instead of using GPS.

Purism obviously isn’t going out of their way to make all Librem 5’s report their location to Google, but the default tools and systems available on nearly all modern Linux distros were already doing this by default and so Librem 5’s back in 2023 inherited it.

I’m told Google is the primary funder of Mozilla in order to prop up Firefox as sponsored opposition to Chrome to avoid legal issues surrounding monopoly behavior and such, and (I presume) to covertly better achieve the monopoly behavior by controlling Mozilla.

So technically speaking, the Google Cloud server intaking sufficient information to identify and respond with the location of nearly all modern Linux machines with a desktop environment was rented in the name of Mozilla from Google.

But after people discussed it on Purism forums here, Mozilla took it down. Apparently it wasn’t profitable or useful to have a server with the location of every non-headless Linux device on the planet. Then, some other group I know nothing about became the configured default to do this 2 way communication on Librem 5 or something. But if you see the comment in your Librem 5’s geoclue config, you can change this WiFi based location to submit directly to Google’s API now (no Mozilla front on top of, just literally Google now since that system is still up for Androids and such I assume) if you so choose.

Or you can fall back to GPS, which should be much better than London but feel very inaccurate relative to the modern duopoly of Android and iOS.

I no longer ask my Librem 5 for my location. If I seek to know directions from my location, such as on a website, I tell it my location with the onscreen keyboard.
