SD card mounting: hit or miss

I have an SD card formatted as ext4, 128 GB. It mounts just fine on other Ubuntu computers. On the Librem 5, sometimes it mounts, sometimes it won’t.

Is this simply a known problem with the Librem 5?

I can’t seem to figure out why it sometimes just refuses to mount.

Can you post the output of sudo dmesg when it doesn’t mount?

Output of dmesg command:

purism@pureos:~$ sudo dmesg

I had similar issue but on a Blackberry phone. The SD card would work fine on Manjaro laptop but, at times, would refuse to mount. My conclusion was, maybe I am wrong, issue was with the SD card, I had bought it online and hence could be bad quality.

Tip: When posting a long, long, long, long terminal output, you can place it in a smaller, scrollable window by adding two lines, one at top and one at bottom, each containing only these three characters: ```

P.S. I ain’t no bot!

This looks fine, your SD card got detected;

Perhaps it’s something in the GNOME session that failed then. But I don’t know where to find the logs for that. Maybe journalctl --user --since=today.

amarok, thanks, didn’t know that.

I tried editing it and adding the two lines you speak of, but it doesn’t look like that did anything - except add two lines with periods.

They’re not periods; they’re the backwards apostrophe-like symbol on the same key as ~.

That’s eMMC, not SD card. SD card is sda.

Check out this topic: Librem 5 SD card reader not working

That’s interesting… and sad. I might have to contact Purism.

I just now remembered something: The phone did recognize and mount the sd card just fine… until last evening when, for the first time, I also had a sim card in the phone. Ever since then is when I started having this problem. Coincidence???

This would suggest that the card reader is being seen, I’d say everything in dmesg output from 3.898461 to 5.034101 is the card reader.

When it boots without mounting the card, perhaps look at the output of lsblk or lsblk -f will give a little more detail but can be hard to read with the screen in portrait orientation and very few visible lines when in landscape (although you can reduce the font size which helps). Either way, among the output you should see mentions of “sda” and “sda1”? in a tree type view something like…

sda

  --- sda1

Is it a new or used card? I have a few aging cards that will mount without fail in one machine but be very intermittent in others.

It is a (lightly) used card.

Attached is a screenshot of the output of lsblk -f, don’t know what it is telling me.

Probably best to take a step backwards and start with the basics. Post output from

ls -l /dev/sda*

fdisk -l /dev/sda

which would suggest that you check carefully that, since they share a tray, they are both present, and in the correct slots, and in the correct orientation.

Messing around with those cards is a bit fiddly and tricky.

Honestly, I basically put the SIM card and the uSD card in the phone the day I got the phone and there the cards have stayed ever since.

I would guess, on limited evidence, that the phone is seeing your drive but not your medium because the uSD card is not sitting correctly.

The output of dmesg together with lsblk -f is showing that the card reader is being recognised but the card or the contents of it are not.

Do you have another card that is known good in another machine that you could try? It could be useful to try to eliminate the possibility of a temperamental or failing card, if you swap the card and see the same results with the other card then it would suggest there may be a hardware issue.

How possible is it to get these things inserted incorrectly? Looking at my tray, the tolerances for the two slots are quite tight, certainly there is no way that the uSD card would fit in the SIM slot. It’s also difficult to see that you could have the cards in the correct slots but incorrect orientation and still be able to insert the tray. It looks to me that the cards wouldn’t sit flush or low enough in the tray to be able to insert it without the use of force.

I don’t know. It’s not something that I want to test with my own phone. Bottom line though is that
a) it’s not working, and
b) it was recently removed, and
c) if you are going to open the tray to try out a different uSD card, it’s an opportunity to check whether everything was correctly inserted in the first place.

I have a brand new 32 GB SD card formatted as FAT32. My ubuntu desktop computer instantly recognized and mounted it, I was able to access it with no problem.

I took the old card out of the Librem - the old card and the sim card were properly seated in the tray - and put in the new card. Then restarted the phone, just for giggles. After it restarted, the phone did not recognize that sd card at all.
