I got my hands into a L5 those days and inserted my SIM card while the phone was on, burned the SIM. Got a new one from another ISP while waiting for my former to arrive by mail. The new one does not connect to internet nor make phone calls. I tried many APN settings. Then tested on a PinePhone and it did not work as well. Previously using the pinephone I never had this kind of issue with an other SIM card. Does anyone knows any APN setting trick? I alwaays see an alert signal on 4G symbol with this SIM card.
The alert ("!") just means you have disabled mobile data I believe. That you are getting “4G” at all is probably a good sign.
Not really, it was actice, but I tried turning it on and off many times.
Sorry for your bad experience - the information that sims should not be inserted or removed while the phone is powered up should be on a bright red warning note packed inside the phones case.
To help you with your question about data connection you’d need to provide some more information. I’m no expert, but I’d suggest that you open a terminal on your Librem5 and dump the following information like this:
sudo mmcli -m any | grep -v 'imei\|Numbers\|equipment id\|device id:' > mmcli-output.txt
nmcli connection show `nmcli co | grep cdc-wdm0 | perl -pe's/^\S+\s+(\S+)\s.*/$1/'` | grep -v '^gsm\..*id:\|^gsm\.pin:' > nmcli-output.txt
This should create two files in your current folder (probably your home directory /home/purism
) that you should read carefully to delete any information you’d consider private and then post them here.
I tried to make the commands filter out the most private information like imei, phone number, sim id. If an internet connection is running your IPs will be included - just read the files to make sure you do not publish any information you’d consider private.
Maybe you should change the topic of your threat to something that is less emotional and more descriptive to attract the people who might be able to help you. Some of us like the challenge of learning all this technical stuff e.g. by trying to help others .
If it is an orange exclamation mark warning, try switching the data roaming off and on again…

kena is my ISP, the other two were apn files were generated automatically, thanks for the tips.
MOD EDIT (dcz): I fixed the listing.
I tried that already, with no good results unfortunately
Unfortunately it is saying:
state: failed
failed reason: sim-missing
So yes there is some problem with the SIM or with accessing the SIM.
Actually when I did those commands, I did not had the sim inside…I will try again later with the sim inside
Ow, that is unfortunate. I get the orange ! every time I use the mobile data HKS. But apparently it’s not just used as a roaming warning.
I has a simpler experience frying the first SIM by accidentally hitting the power button when inserting the SIM tray. When the new one came - I pulled the battery before inserting the SIM into the phone. When I powered it up, the SIM worked but I could not make or receive calls. I called my mobile network provider and they used the phone’s modem information to change data on their system and the problems were solved.
Ah, OK. I guess the phone does not lie in this case then.
I didn’t think it was a roaming warning at all but rather an indication of whether “data” is enabled. (In theory, that could be impacted upon by roaming if your mobile service provider has a roaming agreement but the agreement is for voice calls only, not data calls but …)
Should be made illegal …
Couldn’t one just use the kill switch instead?
That kills the modem.
