Swiping in on-screen keyboards

Is swipe possible on the horizon?

What kind of swipe? To hide OSK?

No as an input method to type words.

I’m a bit confused. Squeekboard has swiping enabled (you can write “red” with one swipe if you want), phosh-osk-stub not. Or do you mean to swipe a letter and OSK print it (like swiping a cycle creates an O)? You need to speak a bit more clear.

They probably mean “swipe typing” or “glide typing”, but I agree that they should be more clear. swipe or glide typing at DuckDuckGo

If I see it correctly, the system takes all the input and tries to match words with auto-completion to something that comes close to what I’m swiping? As far as I know nobody is working on such a system right now. Maybe something for the future. One of the next tasks is to translate as much as possible C-code to Rust code and some more or less little tasks that are still open.

How do you enable swiping? This is news to me. I don’t mean drawing letters I mean selecting them with swipe.

I don’t have a Librem 5, but I think the squeekboard equivalent is pretty basic version and not particularly usable. Here was an old open issue for squeekboard ( Swipe input (#52) · Issues · World / Phosh / squeekboard · GitLab ) with a relevant merge by Guido ( Allow to swipe over characters (!77) · Merge requests · Guido Günther / phosh-osk-stub · GitLab ).

Note that links to a video by Guido posted to librem.one Guido Günther: "Ever since doing the initial completion support i…" - Librem Social

Squeekboard and Phosh-OSK-Stub are not the same. Guido is focusing on p-o-s while MoonlightWave picked up the development few month ago and is kinda the main dev of Squeekboard right now. And because of that the approach got changed a bit in last few month.

Squeekboard is not a basic version, but a pretty customizable one while p-o-s has some fancy features (hide OSK on swipe, word completion, shortcut buttons etc), but also some downsides (not much customizable, typing on release button, …). At the end people can choose what they like more.

I’m using Squeekboard and I’m mostly happy with. If you want to see how I customized it to understand the difference, give a look into my repo (currently working on update).

@raenrfm: It’s enabled by default on Squeekboard. If you use Phosh-OSK-Stub, you do not have this feature. But as Privacy2 said before, it’s not the same kind as on iOS. You will type every letter you swipe above.

It is available via gsettings

What? I could not find any gsettings that changes the input behavior. Can you tell me more?

I don’t remember. I reflashed the device and don’t have the bash history and I don’t remember where I found it. Sorry
