When is Crimson coming?

That response from ChatGPT is apparently not providing specifics about Crimson for the Librem 5, though.

That’s true!! I didn’t specify Librem 5 in my question!! So it’s my fault!! :+1:

Looks like Gnu Crimson will NOT before Christmas.

As the October post states, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. I think rushing a release can result in a very poor impression if it is not done well. I’ve been sated by the backports made to Byzantium, though the advances in Phosh alone have me excited for Crimson and beyond.

Debian 13 is soon to be released in 2025 so it will probably be a while before PureOS GA is based on it.

You can try new Phosh right now

10 posts were split to a new topic: Swiping in on-screen keyboards

Any updates of upgrading from pureOS 11 to 12? Changing sources.list file like on debian will break my OS?

Upgrading from Crimson to Dawn is unsupported.

So reflash is the way? How buggy is Crimson to be a daily driver? I am thinking about just flashing mobian as I like the experience on my pinephone, not sure if everything works in the L5, but maybe should give it a try.

Mobian trixie works fine on L5, with similar battery life limitation.

@FranklyFlawless: you’re still on Crimson unstable, right? Does your phone freeze from time to time?

Only occasionally on the lock screen:

To update my quote linked above… I actually haven’t seen any freeze ups for a while now. Granted I haven’t had the phone on heavy “random” use, just using one chat application almost daily for the most part. So I dunno if it went away, or it’s only when doing certain things. Or maybe it’s heat related.

Also, the heat issue is dead thanks to the insulated 3d printed case I’m using now. (And yes I will be sharing how to reproduce it after I get to a more final form.)

On Byzantium everything is fine (not even those where I had to lock/unlock display), but on Mobian nightly I experience lots of freezes, that’s why I asked about Crimson. I do not care much about Mobian, because it’s a test system, but Crimson should be not worse than Byzantium - so I asked. :slightly_smiling_face:

Could you compare the memory consumption between Byzantium and Mobian? Are you using the same parameters for ZRAM/SWAP?

I recently noticed that my backports take much more memory than before due to lot of preloaded stuff (gnome-calls, chatty, evolution, etc)…

~300MB difference. ~200MB by software center and ~100MB by system. Other things do not matter much. I do not know what parameters I use - both on default.

However, Phosh on Byzantium has a memory leak, so it fills the memory over time when switching between landscape and portrait view. I did not realize it on Mobian. The numbers above are on fresh start.

I wonder if the big red jolly man from north reads these forums and accepts that request via this communication channel…? You may need to use pen and paper, as per the old ritual :writing_hand: :incoming_envelope: :santa:

Be patient!

After a look at the status of the open tickets… i think it will take one or three month more. On PureOS the Crimson upgrade without issues-Check has only one of six and on the Librem5 Thread there are more milestones open and unsolved.

I would love a soon update. But its not probably this year.

Small good steps are fine here.
