They don’t even have it ready for desktop
I tried Crimson on my L5 and it seemed better in some ways. Seemed snappier and smoother but also the phone seemed to heat up more. [Unsure if I optimized my Byantium install and forgot, or if the heating up was something PureOS changed.]
But the millipixels “camera” app was missing. That was the only big one that really hit me so far.
Correct, there is no formally announced roadmap.
No, that possibility is highly improbable. In a very optimistic scenario, the release time between Crimson → Dawn could be significantly shorter than in comparison to Byzantium → Crimson.
I took the phone out of box after 3 months. Run all the updates and I see that not much has changed. Menu still disappears on right-click, background picture doesn’t even show up unless I’m opening an app. Windows on many apps get cut off on the edge off the screen. Battery life is still abysmal.
Bluetooth seems to work now. I can send and receive a file. Before it worked only in one direction. However the transfer rate when receiving file is at 2KB/s. I guess it’s something…
A lot of stuff is coming with Crimson, but we’re still on Byzantium. The background image can bet set manually via gtk.css file (see this - it’s done with gtk.css) otherwise also a Crimson-thing. We got a great kernel update that made the phone running stable all the time. Battery life is a loooooooooong therm process. Don’t expect fast changes here.
Menu does not disappear on right click, but on long touch gesture. It’s also a Crimson thing as far as I know.
Ay, that’s a bit less straight forward due to phosh, but it can be done: TUTORIAL: Add a Custom Background in Phosh
One might consider financially supporting PureOS development:
The first results are published here:
They’re focused on Crimson now, so only a few upstream updates are arriving now, sporadically.
Has Purism given a time estimate for the Crimson release? I didn’t notice any such details in PureOS Crimson Development Report: July 2024 – Purism .
One should note that although the article was vague on the timeline aspect, I believe that the Crimson release was in their 2023 Roadmap. Librem 5 Product Report and Roadmap for 2023 – Purism where they said (on May 25, 2023):
[May 25, 2023] PureOS’s next release “Crimson” is advancing rapidly, which will be based on Debian Bookworm. After that release, we will keep putting effort in our infrastructure to be able to release new versions of PureOS more frequently so that all our customers stay up to date with the latest software and benefits that come with it.
Yeap Purism has not Resumed Gnu Crimson yet. Purism only announced crumbs of Crimson on blog.
Im nervous about whats happening at Purism…
We already lost 1 year of Gnu Crimson development, so at this time will better to focusing only for Gnu Dawn to optimize money resources and software qualities for L5.
Whats going on @francois-techene ?
Why Purism still not Resuming Crimson or Dawn developments ?
Yes, at least for PureOS subscribers, we should be getting updates
hehe… kidding! (:
One update was posted. That was “July 2024”. I don’t know whether that implies that there will be monthly updates, in which case another is imminent.
That post was published August 6, and was a summary of what had happened in July. If this is to be a monthly update, the next would be in early September the earliest.
Already discussed five days ago:
@dcz is continuing their work on mobile Linux thanks to the NLnet foundation, more at https://forums.puri.sm/t/lets-crowdfund-some-development-to-get-pureos-crimson-ready-for-l5/22827/316r.
Im losing all hopes in Purism for Crimson Developments. I be honest i still not supporting Crimson develop for monthly suscription. why? im resentful of Purism for opensourcing too much Gnu OS. I still superfans for Purism and Librem 5 however i never used Librem 5 for daily driver, because to me it not ready yet, however for some reason i had plans to start daily driver on Gnu Crimson stage.
The existence of Flatpak is ridiculous and deteriorates the L5 and Pure Gnu mobile ecosystem.
Yes the existence of options is bad, all options should be taken away.
For those who are lurking here also awaiting the upgrade to Crimson, here is my experience with the upgrade to the underlying Debian base (i.e., 12/Bookworm): PureOS Crimson (Debian 12) on Librem 15 / Librem 13 (x86-64) - #10 by JJR
Not sure if you can be a “superfan” of something yet not support it. Actions speak louder than words.
Your comment about using open source: this is what Purism and their security model is all about.
I’m sure you don’t mean to, but to me this sounds a bit like trolling
