Why I bought a Google Pixel in my struggle against surveillance capitalism

I thought some of you on this forum would enjoy the irony of me buying a Google Pixel 8 Pro in order to fight surveillance capitalism. :wink:

My prediction last year that there would be a major reduction in the number of moddable phones on the market is becoming even worse than I thought. Now that OnePlus is exiting the Western markets and Nothing appears to be about to exit a third of its markets, the situation is about to become even worse. None of the phones released by Motorola and Xiaomi in the last two years have gotten official LineageOS ports, so it is becoming impossible to buy a good phone for custom ROMs in the majority of the world which lives outside of North America, Europe, India, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore.

Why is it? I never used LOS.

It seems a bit too coincidental that Google controls Android and so controls a lot about how easily third-parties can create forks, and now Google dominates sales for “de-googled" phones based on Android… it’s sad and a bit comical :grimacing: :joy: :sob:

Can you explain what kind of support you mean there?

I would have thought that since you will anyway install a FOSS operating system on it, you would not be dependent on what the manufacturer is doing.

You cut off the quote where I say that there were two deciding factors for me, which are longer official support from the manufacturer and an active community to maintain support for the device. I think that Google Pixel will be better than OnePlus and Nothing in both areas.

The longer the manufacturer is providing OS upgrades and security patches, the easier it is for the community to provide custom ROMs for the device, because they can use the manufacturer’s kernel, device tree and drivers, and don’t have to go through lots of painful trial and error each time there is a new AOSP release to get all the hardware to work. After the manufacture stops providing Android upgrades, the quality of the custom ROMs often degrades, and there are often things that don’t work right. If the manufacturer is checking that each monthly security patch from Google doesn’t break anything, then the custom ROMs don’t have to do that testing, and they are also more likely to provide those security patches for their users.

There are so many people using custom ROMs on Pixels, that the community is likely to fix any problems that it finds. The fact that OnePlus is shutting down in Europe and North America makes me question whether there will be a strong community for OnePlus phones in the future. I also doubt that the Nothing phones will have a strong community, because Nothing sales are falling and the Nothing phones released in the last 2 years have not gotten good custom ROM ports.

Fortunately, Sony has historically been extremely development-friendly, and makes it very easy to unlock its devices’ bootloaders just by entering an IMEI online and getting an instant unlock code.

There are some Sonys that are unlockable, however, e.g. in the Japanese market, I believe.

It’s generally super easy to install a custom ROM on most Sonys.

You might not know this, but Sony even gives you access to unlock the xperia bootloader over Vendor Bootloader Lock via easter-egg.

THere was a model of Sony(or several) that were used to build Sailfish community builds, they were a lineageOS kernel and drivers lower level stuff -->libhybris–>SailfishOS. Though the 2026 post reorganization official flagship for Jolla will be custom hardware and all Linux like the N900 though probably with bin-blob drivers locking to that kernel version like the N900. FOSS drivers are not mentioned but miracles can happen, especially with the old Maemo dev lab crew at the helm.

The trouble is, you can’t re-lock the bootloader once unlocked, and the unlocking obliterated the otherwise-excellent resolution of the camera. I know this because I had a Sony Xperia XA2 which I modded to run LineageOS, which I then converted to running /e/OS (I liked the Fake Location applet most especially). I also thought about SailFish, but decided against it (licensing/geography). I then retired that in favor of a Pixel running GOS, but it’s still around as a backup, just in case…

At the moment i have a oem very clean Linux/Android/Google 16 - Linux 6.1 on my xperia 1 vi, 1 vii, however i waiting the open Linux/Android 16 release from SONY which will include Linux 6.6 with fully libre driver and libre android.
Opendevice is very slow to releasing because google dropped a abi on android 15 which sony libre linux driver needed to resupport it , but they completed last week.

So if google is the superevil for android, why to buy a superevil google pixel phone? I just do not get it from opensource user…
I am pretty sure that even unlocking the pixel bootloader there will many fancy google backdoors.

I considered buying a used Xperia 5 V (released in 2023), but when I looked on eBay, they were about 50% more expensive than a used Pixel 8 Pro, and Sony no longer provides software support for the phone.

Sony was one of the best manufacturers, since it provided build instructions and all the code to build AOSP for its phones. It was the only manufacturer that actually provided kernel upgrades for its phones, but it only did that twice. Google and Qualcomm now say that they will provide kernel upgrades in the future, which will be a big improvement. If this happens, Android phones will become more like Linux phones, where kernel upgrades are normal.

Sadly, Sony Xperia sales keep declining. Sony is estimated to have only sold 400,000 phones in 2025, so I can’t see it continuing to sell Xperias in the long term. I also noticed that their web site doesn’t have build instructions for AOSP 16 and AOSP 17.

At this point, the only Android phone manufacturers left that make phones good for modding are Lenovo/Motorola (60M), Google (12M), OnePlus (11.6M), Nothing (2M), GigaSet (1+M), Sony (400k), Fairphone (145k), SHIFT (10k), Teracube, Volla and Brax. Together, those brands sold an estimated 87 million phones in 2025, which is 7% of the 1245.5 million total smartphones sold in 2025. However, that is an overestimate, because the majority of Motorola phones have MediaTek or UniSOC processors and no custom ROMs will ever be made for them. A good portion of Motorola and Google phones are sold through carriers, and many carriers like Verizon don’t allow their phones to ever be unlocked, even if they are no longer under contract. That means that probably only 30 million phones are sold worldwide per year that are good for modding.

That number is about to get much smaller now that OnePlus is about to disappear, since OnePlus will only be sold in China and India in the future, and in China, you need a Chinese ID card and face verification to get the unlock code. Maybe Nothing will survive and maybe it won’t, but it doesn’t look good at this point. I doubt Sony will survive long term. Yes, if you do weird tricks you will be able to get unlock codes from Xiaomi and OPPO/OnePlus, but I doubt that anyone will bother making custom ROMs for them in the future. In other words, I doubt that more than 20 million phones will be sold per year which are good for modding in the future, which would represent about 1.5% of the global smartphone market. However, in most of Africa, Latin America (outside of Mexico) and Asia (outside of India, Taiwan, Singapore and Japan), you won’t be able to buy a good phone for modding.

Given how grim it is going to become for custom ROMs in the future, I think that there will be a market for a good Linux phone, but it has to have a decent processor and camera. Sadly, Rockchip, NXP, Amlogic, etc. simply aren’t interested in making decent mobile processors. I think that some company could make a very compelling Linux phone with the Qualcomm QCM8550 with 16GB RAM and 512GB eMMC that has Waydroid preinstalled to run Android apps and has good video out so it can be marketed as a convergent desktop phone. Of course, using a Qualcomm processor means proprietary blobs, so it wouldn’t appeal to me, but I think that kind of phone could attract a lot of tech enthusiasts, and sell between 30k and 50k units per year if programmers were hired to work on the software.

This phone it on the list for upcoming open linux/android release. There are more devices supported it is just i not updated this directory.

It would be cool if Sony provides an AOSP 16 build for the Xperia 5 V, but very strange since Sony didn’t provide an Android 16 upgrade for the phone, and software support for the phone stopped on Aug. 1, 2026.

I have been using LineageOS for over a decade on Motorola and Xiaomi phones, but I installed /e/OS this morning for the first time, and I’m really impressed. The Advanced Privacy applet in Bliss is brilliant. I would love to see someone make something similar for Linux phones.

I was planning on also testing GrapheneOS, but /e/OS makes privacy so easy that I don’t think that I will bother. Of course, that decision may be influenced by my previous interaction with the chief developer of GrapheneOS, which was very unpleasant to say the least.

But android 15 100% open it just available for Xperia 5 V it not that so cool?

Yeah it is because sony was porting all libre driver from HIDL to AIDL, but they completed the port last week, so i guess the blog for android/linux 16 is soon…
